50 years of the contraceptive pill

2010 marks the 50th anniversary of the contraceptive pill, giving women freedom that they'd never before experienced. Many argue since the pill hit the market, women have had increased access to attending university, pursuing careers, and planning when, or if, they would like to start a family.

For young women, the pill, when used correctly, offers protection against unplanned pregnancy; however, it does not safeguard against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
