FPQ also provides clinical training in all aspects of sexual and reproductive health, and has a comprehensive resource catalogue to support teachers, parents and young people. Girl talk

Girl talk is a new program offered in the Brisbane region. It provides a safe and fun space for girls aged 9 to 13 to talk about puberty and periods with their mother or female carer. See flyers for upcoming programs or contact girltalk@fpq.com.au for more information.

New book for parents

Is this normal? Understanding your child’s sexual behaviour provides parents and carers with a traffic lights framework to help them understand and appropriately respond to children’s sexual behaviours. It shares stories about everyday situations and offers concrete tools to support communication with children about their sexuality and relationships.

Creating Conversations

Creating Conversations is a free program designed to support families with children and young people with a disability in the Central Queensland region. This program will provide you with valuable information, skills and tools. You will learn what to expect as your child develops and what supports healthy sexual behaviours and relationships.

The program is being offered in Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Emerald and Longreach.

CONNECTIONS workshop

Designed for GPs, overseas trained doctors (IMGs), GP registrars, nurse practitioners and practice nurses, the CONNECTIONS workshop builds communication and consultation skills to use with young people attending general practice for contraception and other sexual health concerns. Are you 15 to 24 years old?

Do you live in rural or regional Queensland? We want to know what you think about sexual and reproductive health services in your area. Participate in this confidential survey now and you could win an ipad2. Results will be used to improve services for rural and regional young people in Queensland. This survey is being conducted by James Cook University in collaboration with FPQ.

Survey: talking to children about sexuality

The Parenting and Family Support Centre at UQ and FPQ are researching how parents communicate with their child about sexuality, and what support they would like in teaching their child about sexuality. Parents of chidren ages 3 to 10 are invited to participate in the [survey online].

Blood clot risk and combined hormonal contraception

There has been media attention around studies reporting a greater risk of blood clots (also known as venous thromboembolism (VTE)) in women taking oral contraceptives containing the progestogen drospirenone when compared to oral contraceptives containing the progestogen levonorgestrel. Training required for insertion of Implanon NXT®

A new device used to insert the contraception implant will be introduced midyear 2011. All doctors, including currently trained Implanon® inserters, will be required to undergo MSD training before inserting Implanon NXT®. For more information about training visit MSD’s website.

Busting myths about emergency contraception

Emergency contraception (EC) has been available through Australian pharmacies without a prescription since 2004. Still many young people don’t know much about it. Cairns groups have released resources and conducted research to better support young people’s knowledge of and access to EC, contraception and safer sex.

Online videos for the youth sector workforce

FPQ collaborated with young people from the University of Southern Queensland to produce a series of short videos for people who work with young people. The video series, What young people know, like and need: Sexual health, blood borne viruses and youth-friendly services, shows young people talking about what they think is important about sexual health, blood borne viruses and youth friendly services.
